A flexible endoscope.
Endoscopy means looking inside something or someone. An endoscope is used, with a light and a camera.[1] Typically, endoscopies happen in medical contexts.[2]
Engineers may use borescopes to look inside machines.
Medical applications
Endoscopies can be useful for examining a person's body and checking for issues.[1] For example a colonoscopy checks colon health. The endoscope may enter through an existing hole (e.g. the nose) or an incision, depending on the procedure.[2] Sometimes, other tools are used for reasons like sealing injuries or placing stents.[2]
Depending on the type of endoscopy, patients may go under sedation or anesthesia.[2] The procedure often takes between 30 minutes to 2 hours.[1][2] The procedure is considered very safe overall, with complications being rare.[1]
Engineering
Engineers develop endoscopes. Innovations in endoscopy technology continue.[3][4]
